May 1st General Strike - To Do List!

If you have 5 minutes:

  • Call your federal elected officials (Capitol Switchboard number: (202) 224-3121) with the following message: My name is________, and I am a constituent participating in today’s General Strike. I am calling to urge my elected officials to ask them to prioritize the following five things: (Read the above five bullet points). Thank you.

  • Email this list to 2 other friends with the message: Join me in taking action today!!! Call your Senators and Congressional Representatives at: 202-224-3121.

If you have 15 minutes:

  • Volunteer to get people to local rallies and to make calls to tell people where to go and how to get there.

  • Share copies of this “to do” list with friends and family and ask them to do the same! Grow the movement!

If you have 30 minutes:

  • Volunteer to watch a friend or neighbor’s kids so he/she can make calls and send emails. (This could be done as a group effort… perhaps via a book group or some other regular gathering!)

  • Make calls to offices of your local officials (mayor, alderpersons, committee chairs) to ask what they are doing to acknowledge this General Strike Day and what their plans are for tomorrow! Tell them that “Their constituents deserve to know.”

If you have an hour:

  • In advance of May 1st, check with local community organizers about where help is needed and offer to contact people and organizations with that information.

  • Find out where and when rallies are being held and post the information on your personal sites and see if organizations you belong to will do the same. Be a resource for others.

If you have a few hours:

  • Offer to represent CWTA at rallies and marches on behalf of our organization. Check with CWTA leadership for help and information on what to say!

  • In advance of May 1st, find out where marshal’s training is being offered and get trained so you can help with crowd control at various rallies and marches around the city/communities and keep these marches and rallies peaceful.

After May 1st:

  • Share your experiences via writing: posts on Facebook and Twitter and other social media. Share your experiences (and pictures) with CWTA on our website!

  • Talk about what you feel you accomplished to groups and organizations as well as friends and family.

  • Contact your elected officials to share your experiences and ask them about their participation.
