Help choose the next police superintendent!
One decision, felt in every neighborhood
Chicago is searching for a new police superintendent — the person who will set the tone and priorities for the department for years to come. CWTA joined this coalition because that decision shouldn't be made without the people who live with its results. Residents should have a real say in who gets the job.
Here are the qualities we think are important in the next superintendent:
A deep understanding of the Chicago Police Department’s history of racism, and torture against Black and Latiné residents, along with a determination to end and address this pattern and practice
A long history of holding themselves and the people they work with accountable
An extensive track record of working with and responding to community members, particularly with Black and Latiné communities, including examples of instances where they implemented policy or changed practices based on community input
Experience seeking out and implementing data-driven solutions to public safety issues
An understanding of the importance of quality and consistent leadership and supervision
Knowledge of the CPD Consent Decree, an eagerness to bring the Department into full compliance, and, in particular, a commitment to youth engagement
Commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to strategize and implement alternative response programs
Commitment to protecting Chicagoans against further unlawful federal government intervention and violence
Commitment to removing officers from the department who are found to be involved in or with extremist groups
Commitment to ending the practice of pretextual traffic stops
Tell the Commission that they should reject candidates whose work history shows any patterns of:
● causing any unnecessary serious bodily injury or death
● showing racist or biased policing
● responding to organized movements/protests with repression or violence
● collaborating with federal immigration enforcement.
